Changing an In-line Fuel Filter

*EASY*

An in-line fuel filter on a carburetor-equipped engine is basically the easiest type of filter to change. No special tools are needed and the filter is usually very accessible. If you have an in-line fuel filter, change it according to this procedure:

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground in a well-ventilated area with the engine OFF, the parking brake engaged, and the transmission in PARK (for automatic) or REVERSE (for manual). If the engine has been run recently, let it cool. Raise the hood.
  2. Identify the in-line filter location using your owner's manual. It will have two rubber hoses connected to it with one hose leading to the carburetor. Place absorbent cloths underneath the filter to soak up any spilled fuel.
  3. Use pliers to remove the spring clamps at the inlet and outlet connections of the filter. Squeeze the clamps and pull off the rubber hoses from the used filter with a twisting motion.
  4. Connect the new filter in the reverse manner remembering to attach the hoses over the correct connections. Many filters flow in only one direction and are marked accordingly. Do not install the filter backwards (that is, inlet hose connected to filter outlet and outlet hose connected to filter inlet). Use the spring clamps again to tighten the hose connections.
  5. Start the engine and check the filter connections for leaks. Correct any leaks if necessary.
